INSTRUCTIONS
SAFE SMUDGING PRACTICES Once the herb is lit and burning, gently blow out the flame and the herb will continue to smolder emitting the beneficial smoke. For safety:
- When using the abalone shell to burn the herbs place the shell on a NON-FLAMABLE surface because the shell will get hot.
- You can line the shell with salt or sand to put out herb bundles, incense or loose herbs after each use.
Place herb bundles to rest in the shell's bowl during burning. Herbs can be placed in a small pile and burned. If burning loose herbs, charcoal can be placed in the shell on top of either sand, ash, or crushed stone. (We recommend crushed stone as it can be cleaned and reused). If using chacoal, use all natural charcoal, such as bamboo charcoal. Do not use self lighting charcoal.
When burning in the shell be certain to protect the surface of whatever the shell is resting on as the shell may get quite hot and damage surfaces under it.

INSPIRATIONS
Including abalone shells in your smudging rituals means you are incorporating all four of the earth’s elements: the shell represents water, the smoke represents air, the unlit herbs or sticks represent earth and once they’re lit they represent fire. By incorporating the elements into your smudging ritual, you are inviting Mother Earth (or Mama Gaia) to be the focus of your ceremony. It is here, in the space created by Her, that transformations and manifestations have room to occur.
